A Pair of Chinese Export Armorial Platters
circa 1780 Among many references to the Bootles, Howard notes their landed proprietorship dates from 1317. The original service, 1730, was made of Sir Thomas Bootle, Chancellor to Frederick, Prince of Wales. Bootle's brother, Robert, was a Director of the East India Company and commanded two East Indianmen. His son, Matthes, captained a voyage to Canton in 1745. The replacement service was likely made for Mary Bootle , married to Richard Wilbraham of Rode Hall. Illus: Beverly M DuBose III Collection; Hodroff Collection; David McAlpine Collection Lit: Howard CAP Vol II pp 14, 182
